LINES OF RESEARCH

Our research group is focused on the study of compounds of natural origin to search for new treatments in order to treat different diseases and on their biotechnological and pharmaceutical applications.

To do this, the group has the capacity to extract these molecules of natural origin, the tools for their analytical characterization, in silico screening techniques and cell and animal models to carry out functional activity tests. Finally, our group is capable of carrying out intervention trials in human volunteers.

Obesity and metabolic syndrome: This research line is focused on the search and identification of the bioactive molecules responsible for the management of energy homeostasis and the improvement of metabolic disturbances associated with obesity. This general objective is approached from different strategies: modulating pathways related to energy management and inducing the browning of white adipocyte and activating thermogenesis. This is carried out by using in silico screening techniques and pre-adipocyte cell lines that allow evaluating the capacity of the compounds to activate specific targets, as well as their effects on lipid metabolism and glucolipotoxicity-induced metabolic alterations in adipose tissue. The results of this research provide potential candidates for the elaboration of nutraceuticals that modulate energy metabolism and adipose tissue plasticity as therapeutic strategies against obesity. Representative publication.

Cancer: Our group is aimed to find new compounds with antitumoral activity from vegetal and marine resources. We work in their obtention, isolation and in their mechanism of action using molecular and cellular biology techniques, cellular models and animal studies. This research topic has been recognized as “Project with social interest” by the Patronage Office of the Generalitat Valenciana. Representavite publication.

Cosmetics: Our group is involved in developing new in vitro techniques for the screening of biological activities with cosmetic uses, as antioxidant, antiaging or phtoprotective activities among others. We also are interested in looking for new compounds that can be used as new ingredients for the cosmetic industry.   Representetive publication.

Antimicrobials: New antimicrobial compounds from natural resources are also inside our scope. We are interested in the use of these compounds as new antibiotics and/or preservatives for pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food and feed products. Our group is especially interested in their action against antibiotic resistant strains, which are one of the most important threats nowadays. Representative publication.
